190. UNDERPASSES
The first part of the action—the KD (AM) component proper—involved locating underpasses on a satellite map between the village of Kiovy Gorki and the Kiovogorskoye Field, traversing them, and drawing three gold lines with a gold felt-tip pen on the back cover of the 1931 *Hütte* engineering handbook. These two underpasses are situated beneath the interchange of the Lobnya Northern Bypass where it intersects Rogachevskoye Highway (the oddity of this site lies in the fact that the underpasses seem to lead from nowhere to nowhere and back again, with a very low probability of anyone ever walking through them). Upon reaching the Kiovo Field and crossing it, we proceeded to the "KD Library" clearing; there, using a small shovel, we deepened the "turtle pit" (which had housed a small iron turtle figure on a spike from 2005 to 2012) while playing an audio recording of two chapters—Nos. 49 and 99—from Wu Cheng'en’s novel *Journey to the West* (depicting the two episodes where a giant turtle ferries the novel's protagonists across a river and back). The *Hütte* handbook, bearing the triangle of gold lines on its cover, was placed at the bottom of the pit, alongside the speaker playing the recording. The handbook itself had been allocated via an *I Ching* divination to D. Novgorodova, but she decided to leave it in the pit (acting on a suggestion by AM and her own decision). Afterward, we headed back to the Kiovo Field for Sitar’s action, "Colored Intervals":
Not far from the center of the field, a folding stool and a support base made of two small canvas bags filled with earth had been set up. Each participant—with the exception of Yu. Ovchinnikova (who was filming)—received one of six multicolored hourglasses via a blind draw. The set comprised timers with durations of 10, 5, 3, 2, 1, and 0.5 minutes. According to the event’s script, these time intervals were arranged in descending order, from the longest (10 minutes) to the shortest (30 seconds). When their specific interval arrived, each participant performed a standardized sequence of actions: they "started" their timer by placing it upright on a stand while aloud stating its color (e.g., "red," "green"); sat on a stool; watched the sand flow from the upper to the lower bulb; announced "done" the moment the interval ended and took a photo of the stopped timer with a smartphone; then removed the timer from the stand and yielded the spot to the next participant. During the intervals measured by the timers, participants who were not currently active were encouraged to engage in unfocused contemplation while simultaneously—whenever possible—noting and counting the "singular events" occurring around them (i.e., events describable by verbs in the perfective aspect, such as "the wind died down," "a bird flew out of the forest," etc.). Upon the conclusion of each successive interval, every participant (except for the "timekeeper" for that specific interval) reported the number of events they had recorded during that period to the rest of the group. The data collected were entered into a table that subsequently became part of the event documentation. After the final thirty-second interval concluded and the chart was filled in, the soil from the sacks (dug out of the "turtle pit")—which had served as a stand for the hourglass—was scattered across the site of the action.
